Is Medium Size Lump In The Back A Cause For Concern?

Good Afternoon, I have a medium size lump/bulge in the center of my back. It gets feels tender if rubbed, other wise no real pain but I can feel that it is there. My husband states is feels soft, I think its closer to hard. He says it does move a little. I have had cyst before and this does not feel like the other cysts I have had in the past. Should I be concerned?

Hello,

Any lump in the body which is not painful should be examined by a doctor as soon as possible. I do not wish you scare you, but presence of bulge without any history of trauma can suggest a cyst or a tumor. There are so many diseases in the medical science that present with presence of a lump. In any case, it needs to be checked and removed.

You should go to a physician for physical examination. He/she might decide to take an x-ray to check if the problem is in the bone, MRI to rule out soft tissue changes and biopsy to check if the growth is benign (growth only in the area of the lump) or malignant (growth that spreads to other distant areas of the body). Before you go to doctor, do check yourself carefully for presence of any other lumps like this in any other area of the body.

In any case, do not get scared. A benign growth can be excised easily. Even if it is malignant, there are so many advances in the medical science that many patients with malignancies live long and comfortable lives. I would advise not to ignore it.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthCareMagic. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
