Is Loose Gum Tissue In A Child A Matter Of Concern?

My son lost a tooth a couple days ago. Today he hit his lip while playing (fat lip) and he now has what looks like a black tooth where his adult tooth should be growing in, but it is soft like loose gum tissue. Should we be concerned? should we schedule a dentist visit tomorrow?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. I am assuming that your son has lost the deciduous tooth and the injury that he has suffered has had an impact on the permanent tooth which is developing and has started to erupt into oral cavity.

If the permanent tooth has changed its color from whitish to black, it means that the pulp tissue inside the tooth that supplies blood to the tooth has suffered the injury and the tooth has become dead.

At this stage, the root of the tooth will be incomplete in growth and would still be developing. Thus, to save the tooth, the tooth will have to be treated with pulpotomy and if needed apexification procedure which will save the tooth in mouth while helping it to complete its root development.

Thus, my advise to you is to make an appointment with the Endodontist who specializes in traumatic injuries to teeth and root canal and associated procedures. Ice application will help in reduction of the swelling on the lip. You are seeing more spongy gum tissue around the tooth because the tooth is in the eruption stage and it is normal.

I hope this answer guides you well. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish your son feels better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
