Is Knot And Itchy Bruise On Leg And Foot After Being Hit From Hammer Normal?
Hi, a few days ago I was sitting on my porch stapling chicken wire to a picture frame. I was using a small hammer to hamner the staples down farther into the frame. Well the hammer slipped and hit the lower part of my leg. A few minutes later I had a huge knot on my leg and it started to bruise. I put ice on it and elevated it. The swelling went down considerably but the knot is still there but smaller and I have an alful bruise all down the bottom part of my leg and the upper part of my foot. Now the bruise itches inside the skin. Is this normal?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query.
It seems to be soft tissue injury . Large knot might be due to haematoma formation(collection of blood). You need an x-ray to rule out any bony injury. I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.Beside icing and elevating it, you can take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid putting weight and rest well.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
