Is It To Be Concerned About The White Coating On The Tongue?

I am 15 years old, 140 something pounds and have never had mono or strep in my life. My doctor recently (2 days ago) prescribed me Prednisone for what he suspects to be mono. (Failed a strep test, SEVERE sore throat, and fatigue) But, my concern is, my tounge now has a white coating on the back and the papillae are extremely enlarged back there. (my throat has also been peeling skin for 2 days or so.) Is it normal for my tongue to be this red with a white coating, and for the papillae to be this enlarged?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand..

As per your complain the white coating over the tongue after taking Prednisolone that is a steroid seems to be due to yeast infection known as Oral Thrush and redness of tongue and enlarged papillae are due to both thrush as well as mono causing throat inflammation..You should consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and in case if thrush is diagnosed you will be advised to take antifungal medications like Nystatin mouthwash gargles, clotrimazole lozenges and taking ample of yoghurt and garlic..
For redness and soreness of tongue you can gargle with numbing mouthwash containing lignocaine, suck ice and take Ibuprofen..
Avoid hot and spicy food..
For sore throat you can gargle with warm saline water, suck throat lozenges, do steam inhalations and take tylenol or ibuprofen..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
