Is It Safe To Take Primolut For Irregular Periods?

Hi Doctor, I have PCOS. I took Diane 35 pills for 1 year, and it helped in regulating my period. After that, I was advised to stop to see if my cycle would be regular by itself. Unfortunately, that didnt happen. I went through 8 months without a cycle. I am currently advised to take primolut. Is this advisable?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

Welcome to HCM and thank you for the query.
I understand your disappointment and concern.
PCOS is due to Insulin Resistance. Diane 35 is a preparation which contains 2 sex hormones, cyproterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol. The apparently normal periods you were getting were due to withdrawal bleeding on completing each course of the drug. This does not correct the Insulin Resistance. Primolut N tablets contain norethisterone, which is synthetic progesterone. This again will produce withdrawal bleeding but not a regular menstrual cycle.
One of the medicines that would help reduce the Insulin Resistance , the cause of PCOS is Metformin. You require this to reduce the underlining problem, produce ovulation and a normal menstrual cycle.
I am available if you have further queries.
Best Wishes,
Dr Noble Zachariah
