Is It Safe To Take Hydrochlorothiazide For Constant Hands And Face Swelling?

For several weeks, I have slight to moderate, constant pain under left rib and then lesser pain started under right rib. (I notice that the pain increases under slight stress.) I went to doctor and all tests are fine except slightly elevated liver function. Doctor prescribed Prilosec since he thought it might be a stomach lining irritation. I now have a small lump under left rib (that I feel only when standing), which is slightly tender to the touch. And, you might want to know that I have constant hands/face swelling and am prescribed low dose of hydrochlorthiazide. Any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Infections, food allergy, anxiety or stress can cause facial and hands swelling but these swelling may be indicative of anaphylaxis. Other medical factors causing similar symptoms are congestive heart failure, serious kidney disease, acute interstitial nephritis or cirrhosis of the liver, etc. Lump under the left rib cage may be indicative of Liver enlargement (hepatomegaly), hernia, abscess or tumor. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP. Get blood workouts and Imaging tests done. The pathology causing you discomfort should be detected & treated so that the swelling gets reduced. You are expected to take hydrochlorothiazide (diuretic) after diagnosis of the factor causing water retention. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
