Is It Safe To Take Procrit For Low Hemoglobin Count While Suffering From Thalassemia?

MY Mom is 80 years old and has thalassemia so she has to get regular blood transfusions, like every 4-6 mths. Her hemoglobin goes as low as 6 and then she get 2 units of blood and it will take it up to 8.9. While in the hospital last week for a blood transfusion a Dr informed her again about trying Procrit. She tried this many years ago but she said it was very painful. Can you tell me which is better for her?

Hi,

Procrit is believed to improve hemoglobin count in thalassemia patients in various clinical studies. Well controlled clinical trials have not been performed till now. But 2 patients of mine got benefitted from epoetin or Procrit. There is nothing wrong in trying Procrit if your mother is comfortable. Now a days it's administration is not so painful like before.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
