Is It Safe To Take Citalopram Along With Mirtazapine?
My daughter has been on Citalopram for 10 years and now has been asked to take Mirtazapine as well. Is it normal to take 2 antidepressants at once and what are the risks? Changing from one to the other I can understand but taking 2 seems extreme. She is about to embark on a trip and has only just started ta Hoping you can advise. Concerned parent.
Hi! It is not uncommon to combine to antidepressant drugs for optimal control of depression. However one has to keep an eye on the possible drug interactions whenever this is done. Citalopram and Mirtazapine indeed can be given together but one has to watch out for the development of 'serotonin syndrome' which is heralded by confusion, sweating , a fast heart beat, hallucinations etc. I'd suggest you talk to your doctor explaining your concern to her. Ultimately your doctor is the best judge. All the best!
