Is It Safe To Remove The Dead Tissue From A Wound?

Mybrother is diabetic and is waiting to have his 6th back surgery. He sits most of the time and has a large wound on his right buttocks. A plastic surgeon is going to operate on the wound in about a month; in the mean time my sister and I are changeing the dressing twice a day. There is a large mass/chunk of tissue that is yellow hanging out of the wound that we have been told that we must try to pull out and to just apply wet to dry dressings over. Also, there is a horrific smell and drainage coming from the wound and he is not on any antibotics. Do you think that it is appropriate to us take care of this instead of a Physician or someone who should be removing the dead tissue? And should he be on medication to prevent an infection since the wound smells and is opwn?

Your history suggests an infected wound . In a person with diabetes this should ideally be taken care of by a physician teaming witha plastic surgeon .he will need more intensive wound care and probably intravenous antibiotics after cultures and some lab work . It is also probable that his sugars are not controlled and that needs to be addressed as well .
