Is It Safe To Have Unprotected Intercourse Within 2 Weeks Of DEPO Shot?

Hi, I had recently two weeks ago on January 13 had gotten a first time depo shot. I had this shot before but, a long time ago, they took me off and when I asked for a birth control they put me back on. That was almost a year ago. I was told to wait two weeks to get in full effect before I have unprotected sex, I ended up having sex on January 27, yesterday. I want to know by any chance at all am I protected or do I need to take a pregnancy test!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
According to the evidence gathered from studies with depo shot you are protected. It is 99% effective and your timing is perfect.
Still, if you start feeling pregnancy symptoms, than it is recommended to use emergency contraception and to take a pregnancy test to know for sure.
I would also recommend using a condom to protect you from STDs, if we are speaking about non-marital intercourse.
I hope I have answered your question.
Wish you good health!
