Is It Safe To Have A Surgery For Ulcer While Having Low Hemoglobin Levels?

Hi , My Father has Diabeties, high blood pressure and Asthama. Recently he had a problem with hemoglobin levels in his blood. In the last 4 days his hemoglobin percentage got down from 7 to 4. He had blood vomitings and motions. Blood was supplied to him and after the hemoglobin has increased to 8 , they did endoscopy and they diagnosed as duodenal ulcer. After giving some antibiotics vomitings were controlled but now he had frequent urination problem. I Am just wondering is that a common symptom or anything to worry. As he has respiratory problem too, is surgery for ulcer is advisable? Please suggest! Thanks, Priya

Hello,

As your father has diabetes, the frequent urination is likely associated with it which is commonly observed in diabetic patients. The vomiting and presence of blood in it indicates upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to the ulcers.

The low levels of hemoglobin might be the result of these bleeding ulcers. The doctors who are currently looking after him must be aware of his overall condition and then only they have taken the necessary steps in management. They have successfully raised the Hb levels with transfusion although the underlying cause of the bleeding must be treated soon to prevent further fall.

So the must have suggested the surgery as the best option. They only do it after careful evaluation of current status of the patient. So, do not worry. Talk to the doctors about your doubts, they will explain everything clearly to you as they are well aware of his current situation and they must be suggesting the best available management plan for it.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
