Is It Safe To Give Steroids To Young Children?
Hi Doctor,
I have a daughter who is 16 months. She had cold and cough, and was wheezing. Though the cough syrup helped subside the cough, her breathing rate became faster and she was in distess. Her pedia recommened 3 quick nebulizations at the hospital followed by an antibiotic course (Azithral 100) and Omnicortel Forte, which I believe is a steroid. Is it safe to give such steroids to such young children?

Hi... You are right...its a steroid...Now a days...steroids are the best drugs for acute severe wheeze. But if u ask me indications... I would prefer a back to back metered dose inhaler & reassessing after an hour rather than directly start in steroids. But low O2 content or hypoxia is a definite indication for steroids.
