Is It Safe To Gargle With Diluted Dettol For Sore Throat?

hello doc
I am suffering from sore throat since past few days..i generally use saline water for gargling...recently I came across a bottle of Dettol antiseptic and came to know that diluted Dettol could be used for gargling to treat sore throat..is it really okay?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you are suffering from sore throat and saline rinses not giving good effect, you can gargle with dettol as it does not give any specific side effects, but if gets accidentally swallowed can cause mucosal irritation due to chloroxylenol which is one of the component of dettol. I would suggest you to would suggest you ti gargle with betadine mouthwash or listerine as these have antiseptic properties. You should take proper antibiotic course along with anti-inflammatory drugs. Avoid cold liquids and spicy food. Visit ENT specialist once and get it examined.
