Is It Safe To Discontinue Lamictal Cold Turkey And Start Keppra?

My son is on lamictal and is getting skin rashes. He went to the neurologist this past week and is under the impression that the doctor told him to discontinue the lamictal cold turkey and start on a low dose of keppra. He has grand mal epilepsy and this sounds very scary to me. What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi! I have gone through your question and I understand your concern .
I would say that when patient are under Lamictal one of a serous side effective is allergic reaction that start like skin rush , so it is neccesary to stop this medication and to start another one like Kepra .
The skin problem start with small rush and may go on with other problem such : hives , blistering or peeling of your skin , painful sores in your mouth or around your eyes , fever , headache , skin pain , facial swelling, tongue swelling causing a serous condition like Stevens - Johnson syndrome .
I would recommend you to check your child of any of these skin problem If it's any of these call the doctor as soon as you can .
Also follow the advice of the doctor , stop Lamictal and start Kepra with small dose : 500 mg twice a day(1000mg daily) , and every 2 weeks give additional dosage 1000 mg daily until you get the maximum dosage 3000 mg daily .

I recommend also To talk again with your trating doctor so you can have your children under control during this period of changing medication and skin rush.

If you have any additional question please feel free to ask me.
Wish your child good health .
Thank you for using HCM
