Is It Possible To Get Carpal Tunnel From Shoulder Surgery?

HI, I had shoulder surgery for a torn rotor cuff and after the surgery I developed carpal tunnel. My doctor sent me for some tests and they also said I had carpal tunnel, now I have never had a problem, The doctor said that he has seen at least 50 people that after shoulder surgery develop carpal tunnel. My question is I had the surgery to release the problem but now my had is worse and it feels like electric shocks going through my hand and it is starting to effect my whole hand. What can be done and why did I get carpal tunnel from my shoulder surgery?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Any thing that causes squeezing of nerve at wrist or carpal tunnel (space between fingers) causes carpel tunnel syndrome. An injury / surgery at rotator cuff at shoulder can cause similar symptoms. If the nerve fibers supplying affected area is kinked / squeezed in healing tissue. The site of problem decides line of treatment. You should undergo a detailed physical examination and imaging investigation like MRI to find out the cause. Please consult the treating orthopedic surgeon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
