Is It Possible For Scaphoid To Shrink?

I had a screw put through my scaphoid and it stuck out the top of the scaphoid by 1mm and out the bottom by 2mm. My surgeon is trying to tell my the my scaphoid shrunk and that is why the screw is sticking out. Is this possible or could it be that the screw was just too long.
