Is It Ok To Take Patassium And Magnesium Supplements With BP Medicines?

My doctor has recently put me on 5 mg of Norvasc at night, and I am on lisinipril 24/20 in the morning. Is it okay to take a potassium supplement and a magnesium supplement with these meds? I have legs cramps almost nightly, but do not want to keep taking the supplements if they don t agree with my BP meds.

Hi,

It is not safe to take potassium while on Lisinopril. Taking potassium supplements while on BP medication lisinopril may cause hyperkalemia (increase potassium levels in the blood). Hyperkalemia can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest. You may be more likely to develop hyperkalemia while using these medications if you are elderly, dehydrated, or have kidney disease, diabetes, or advanced heart failure.

It is better to avoid potassium supplements while taking lisinopril. For the the leg cramps occurring at nights I advise you to:
* To do frequent stretching your leg muscles or riding a stationary bicycle for a few minutes before you go to bed
* Flex your foot up toward your head
* Take plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration
* To take warm baths or showers
* Keep the bed covers loose and not tucked.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
