Hello,

It is normal for the periods to be lacking after delivery while a woman is breastfeeding. On the other hand once the periods come back they should be regular. Because you have irregular bleeding and also heavy bleeding you first need a pregnancy test and if it is negative repeat it in 3-4 days. If negative again you will need a visit with your doctor for two main reasons. One is to identify the cause of the bleeding and get proper treatment and the second reason is to rule out heavy bleeding and anemia due to it.
The doctor will do a gynecological examination and gynecological exam and may ask for other tests depending on the findings like transvaginal ultrasound, pap test, cervical smears for chlamydia and gonorrhea and CBC.

I hope I have answered to your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards,
