Is It Normal To Experience Aggression After Starting Methylin?

My 4 1/2 year old son (38 lbs) started taking 10 mls of Methylin in the morning for ADHD. The first night, he seemed to have an out of body experience with rage and aggression that he essentially had to be pinned down to calm him. The second day, he had one raging episode in the early afternoon. Today is day three and so far he has been calm. Is this a normal reaction to the body/medicine? We have given the meds around 7:30/8:00am and notice the change in behavior, so far, around 6:00 in the evening. We re very worried with his behavior and just aren t sure what to do and what to expect with this medicine...we understand all kids are different and reactions vary. Thanks, Jamie

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Definitely each kid is different and reacts differently to methylphenidate. The effect of this drug is also dose dependent. It improves aggression, causes fear extinction and relieves anxiety symptoms in ADHD patients. This drug generally helps the child to focus and pay attention.

However in some cases, the aggressiveness of child may be increased and there may be presence of mood swings and temper tantrums. Though these effects have been described as mild and many a times go by themselves with time, but in about 20% of cases these may result in hospitalization and / or some injuries.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
