Is It Common For An Infant To Have His Ear Split At The Base?

I have a 7 month old son, and behind his ear on the lower part, the ear is split from the base. It doesn t seem to bother him, and it looks like it has been chafed and dry, I noticed yesterday. Is this common, and am I able to put Neosporin on it until I can get him in for an appointment.
