Is It Advisable To Go Down From 9 Units Of Alcohol To Zero Suddenly?

Regarding alcohol consumption, I am currently consuming 9 units of alcohol per evening and am considering abstaining. Is it safe to go from this level of consumption to zero immediately or should I taper down? (if so, over how long a period aught I taper for?)

varies, but certainly withdrawal (even fatal) can occur from stopping high amounts of alcohol suddenly. There is generally a lot of signs as the withdrawal is occurring. It is more likley if someone keeps alcohol in their system All The Time. Mostly we'd do this under some professional observation for 24-48 hr.
