Is It A Problem To Have Swelling Near An Amputated Toe?

Hello. I am type 1 diabetic. I had my big toe amputated 8 weeks ago. My doctor/surgeon instructed me to change bandages everyday for the first 3 weeks afterwards everyother day. I had a nurse doing this for the first 6 1/2 weeks and I have been doing it for the last 10 days. The nurse was only using soap and water scrubbing the wound pretty hard. The healing was very slow. For 10 days I have been using microdacyn spray and gauze pads with a cream ( triticum vulgare ). The healing has been amazing for the last 10 days. The wound runs from where my toe was to 8 inches toward the upper ankle. All that is remaining to heal is the stub where my toe was. When I say heal I am only referring to scabbing over. My question is should I be concerned about swelling of the areas closest to the wound? Also the underside of my foot close to my toes has swelling also. My doctor said fluid tends to collect for a while after surgery and to elevate my foot as much as I can. Ur opinion please...

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Swelling can occur after a surgical procedure. It occurs as a result of the inflammatory process associated with surgery and with healing.

Swelling can also occur in infection but in that case the wound may have a discharge, it would be red, tender, with increased warmth.

In the absence of these signs, the swelling is likely just related to your procedure and the healing process.

You should consider elevating the foot as your doctor suggested.

I hope this helps
