Is Immediate Medical Attention Required For Persistent Cough And Chest Pain?

I have had a persistent cough with phlegm for 4 weeks. I have been to my GP and just finished 7 days of antibiotics for chest infection. The cough is not going away and I have pain in my right chest which I think could be muscle strain but no pain on left side? I am also quite wheezy . I have another appointment to see GP next Tuesday. Should I wait until then? I havent had a cold just the cough.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

There are 3 main causes of persistent cough; (1) post nasal drip of mucus to the back of the throat.
This is the most common cause. It would be treated with the use of topical nasal sprays and oral antihistamines

(2)GERD- gastroesophageal reflux disease. Reflux can cause coughing. It is treated with lifestyle changes and medications such as protinix, nexium, prevacid, prilosec

(3) cough associated with asthma

The exact treatment would depend on the cause found by your doctor.

I hope this helps
