Is High Level Of CPK Attributed To Exercise?

I have high CPK. Last test was 393, October 2013 test 278, April 2013 test 166, Oct. 2012 test 254. I exercise alot. My doctor is not concerned since it's under 500. She attributes high CPK to exercise. I have no pain and primarily dance, do yoga and pilates, a little weight lifting. What do you think? Thank you!

Hi welcome to HCM

I have gone thru your query regarding level of CPK .

The normal concentration of CPK in the blood of a healthy adult is 22 to 198 units per liter.
Low thyroid function can be a cause of high CPK, so get it checked.

Some medications can also increase CPK. Among them are amphotericin B, ampicillin, some anesthetics, blood thinners, aspirin, clofibrate, dexamethasone, furosemide, alcohol, and cocaine.

Studies show that ,sometimes , CPK level can increase with heavy exercise .
Your doctor seems to be right .
To make sure your high CPK is not induced by heavy exercise, don' t do exercise for 5 days and have another test done after that . You can do dance, yoga & deep breathing .

CPK's normal function is the transformation of creatine acid into phosphate, which is a usable source of energy for muscle, heart, and brain cells.

It plays an important role in metabolism but when CPK levels get elevated,
can indicate muscle destruction, heart attacks, central nervous sysmtem issues, and others . Long term exposure of high CPK can load up your kidneys, and may cause muscle loss and weakness.

So you have to be careful not to over indulge in heavy exercise .
