Is Genital Exam Necessary During Yearly Physical?

Is it normal for a doctor not to perform a genital exam during a yearly physical? I am 35 and have been seeing the same doctor for at least three yearly physicals. She has never checked my genitals in anyway. All doctors I had prior to that perform a check during physicals. If this isn t abnormal, that s fine, but I need to know if maybe this makes my doctor uncomfortable and should I switch doctors to ensure I am getting adequately examined.

Hi there

Usually in a general check up, the doctor takes a history, all the details that you can tell about. Accordingly you are examined and then investigations are carried out, as per the needs and the package.

Ideally yes, a complete physical examination should include an examination of the genitals. But more often than nought, patients get uncomfortable with this type of examination. Therefore many doctors skip that part unless of course you complaint of a problem in that respect.

I wont suggest that you change the doctor. Instead, if you have any issues with the genitals, inform them in the history and the doctor will arrange for the examination.

Best of luck
