Is Flying Safe While Suffering From Pneumonia?

my mother, who is 76, was feeling very ill, severe cold symptoms and was told by her doctor that she has pneumonia. They put her on a 7 day antibiotic. The problem is that she planned to fly from detroit to houston in just 4 days for the Christmas holidays....is that safe?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Pneumonia is a serious and potentially fatal lung infection. Usually doctors recommend putting air travel on hold when a patient is suffering from pneumonia because the changes in air pressure in the cabin and the resulting reduced oxygen levels can create serious consequences.

it is strictly advised that people diagnosed with pneumonia should not fly until they are well enough to handle the stress and are sufficiently advanced in recovery that they cannot infect other passengers.

So I will not advise my patient with pneumonia in the middle of treatment unless there is an emergency.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
