Is Facial Pigmentation Side Effect Of Medication For Rosacea?

Hello, I have been diagnosed with Rosacea..My doc suggested me Allegra 180mg and cynomycin 50 mg (twice daily) for 1 mth..It had a positive effect on my skin and I could see my rosacea diminishing. But when i discontinued the medicines, it started developing again. So whenever I have flare-ups , I take these medicines. But its been few months now, I can see some pigmentation marks on my face..Is is due to these medicines?? My doctor has told me to discontinue them and take tab AZEE 500mg(1 daily for 3 days in a week) for 6 weeks..Will it help in curing my rosacea?? If not, then which medicine can be used for longer time to keep it under control with no major side effects..

Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

One of the Oral drugs that you have been taking contains Minocycline. Minocycline has a well-documented and cosmetically dis-pleasing side effect is skin pigmentation.
Diffuse muddy-brown discoloration in areas of sun exposure is a side effect of Minocycline and is due to increase in melanin.
Your doctor did the right thing by discontinuing minocycline.
The Oral tablet that he has not started is actually Azithromycin and is also effective in Rosacea. Azithromycin is usually administered in pulse doses i.e 3 consecutive days every week.
Besides Oral medications, topical anti-inflammatory preparations like Metronidazole gel, Azaleic acid gel, Pimecrolimus are also effective in maintaining remission in Rosacea.
I suggest you to follow up with your doctor regular intervals so that the necessary changes can be made, as and when required.
Use a broad spectrum suncreen whenever out in the sun as skin in rosacea is sensitive to sun and might get redened.

Regards
