Is Extraction Of Wisdom Teeth Advisable While Having Severe Pain?

I am 65 and have all my 4 wisdom teeth, the lowers partly erupted. None have ever been problem until about 3 years ago. I developed minor/moderate pain in the area of the right lower. My dentist said it was an abscess. I was given an antibiotic and the pain soon resolved. My dentist wanted me to see an oral surgeon and have all 4 wisdom teeth removed. The OS was content to do the job. In the end, I did not carry through, partly because of what I read about increasing complications after age 40. So now, 3 years later, I have a small amount of pain in the area of that tooth when I bite something hard. Do I now have it pulled? All of them pulled? Take antibiotics again for a week and hope for 3 more pain-free years?

Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...
As per your complain and presentation of symptoms if you have an infected wisdom tooth that is causing pain first of all get an IOPAR [X RAY] done to rule out the exact status of the tooth.

If it can be saved and root canal treatment can be done then you can get Root Canal Treatment done followed by antibiotics and painkillers..
But if there is extensive decay then extraction has to be done..

In case if extraction is required you can get the offending tooth extracted alone or the two wisdom teeth that is the upper and lower on the same side can be removed..

Taking antibiotics alone will not permanently resolve the problem and you will have to get the treatment or extraction done as it is not always necessary that you can stay 3 years ainless and even the pain recurrence can occur after a few days to a few weeks depending upon the severity of infection..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
