Is Excessive Saliva At The Back Of The Throat Normal Post A Tonsillectomy?

Hi! I m 21 and had my tonsillectomy around 12:45 this afternoon. My pain isn t horrible. It hurts but it s more uncomfortable pain than pain that causes worry. I noticed that I have a lot of saliva or mucus in the back of the throat which I assume is from the body trying to heal or intubation or something. However, I just shot up out of sleep (like ten minutes into it, sadly) because when I Inhaled spit moved in my throat as if it were attempting to enter my airway and when exhaled it made a weird noise and moved forward in my Throat making it very hard to breath. I coughed involuntarily and it didn t come up because the cough wasn t hard enough but it did move somewhere else for now. Is there any way to fix this so I don t choke in my sleep tonight ? My mother probably wouldn t be too excited about that lol.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain excessive mucous production after Tonsillectomy is not an abnormal finding as it occurs due to inflamed and irritated tissues post surgical procedure..
As the healing will progress the mucous formation will reduce..
In case if there is choking due to excess mucous formation you can consult your treating Surgeon and get evaluated..
He can use a suction machine to suck of excess mucous..
You should also avoid sleeping in supine position that is straight on your back and recline in left or right lateral position..
After 24 hours of the surgery start doing warm saline gargles..
Take a soft diet with plenty of fluids..
Maintain a good oral hygiene to reduce chances of infection.

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
