Is Endoscopy Safe For An Elderly Person?

Is it safe for my 91 year old mother to have an endoscopy? Her doctor scheduled this test to look for other reasons that might be affecting her recent diagnosis of laryngitis, now possibly pneumonia. Is this necessary? Would you prescribe this test? She takes no medication.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The endoscopy can be performed safely under local or sedation analgesic dose of anesthesia provided he is fit medically to undergo such procedure on OPD basis. Actually it is the responsibility of the assistant anesthetic to evaluate the grandma on basis of cardio-respiratory status and other vital parameters with co relation of lab, 2 D Echo, EKG findings to post her for the procedure with due explanation of risks and benefits of the procedure. Otherwise just age number does not mandate to not undergo for the needed procedure as endoscopy or else.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
