Is Drilling Inside An Artery Safe?

I am going into the hospital to have hardened calcium drilled out of a heart artery with a diamond tip, and then a stent put in. The cardiologist surgeon is downplaying the serious of this procedure. But is drilling inside an artery safe? One little slip and it seems like I could have serious internal bleeding. Is this procedure safe?

Hi.

I am glad we connected.

Based on the symptoms and the description, it sounds like you may have a calcified aorta. The drill that you have described may be safe if there is not high power usage.

Also, the surgery would be safer if the surgery is robotic or robot assisted. Also, the experience of the surgeon and the counter measures that are followed would prevent internal bleeding.

However, it would still be a good idea to discuss this with your doctor and to get the risks discussed in detail.

I hope this helps. All the best.
