If you are having
diabetes mellitus, then you are at a risk for getting low blood
glucose or
hypoglycemia in medical terms. The chances of getting hypoglycemia are more when a person is taking
insulin. The symptoms include
dizziness,
fainting spells, sweating, confusion, increased hunger, shaking and trembling hands and feet, difficulty concentrating and if left untreated, the patient may lose consciousness and collapse. Whenever you have such symptoms, you must check your blood sugar using a glucometer device. if blood sugar is less than 70 mg/dl, then you need to treat hypoglycemia, by taking 15 gms of sugar or glucose, i.e. 3 tsps of sugar/glucose, 3-4 glucose biscuits, a glass (200 ml) of juice sweetened with sugar/soft drink but NOT diet drink as Diet drinks do not raise blood glucose quickly.
Low blood glucose happens when either you have not eaten food for a long time/eaten very less/exercised too much/ taken more insulin than needed. So next time you have such an experience, be ready to treat it by keeping your glucometer nearby and always carry glucose/sugar/candies/fruit juice with you wherever you go.
Once you blood glucose returns to normal after treating hypoglycemia, it is advisable to eat a
carbohydrate and protein rich snack like peanut and jaggery bars, potato and cheese sandwich, sprouted pulses like whole green gram or whole bengal gram with puffed rice/rice flakes etc to ensure the episode doesn't get repeated again.
