Is Dayquil Advisable For Persistent High Fever?

Hi! I woke up this morning with a 101 fever so I took a dose of dayquil. I then took followup doses of dayquil throughout the day (making sure they were at least 4hrs apart). In total I ve had three doses of dayquil. Would it be safe for me to take a dose of niquil before bed (more than 4 hours after my last dose of dayquil)? My current temp is 100.8

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Fever is a symptom of an underlying disease. There are many causes of fever such as malaria, typhoid, infectious mononucleosis, tuberculosis, dengue, etc.

Dayquil is for symptomatic relief of fever and nasal congestion. It is not the right medicine for fever.

Here is my advice:
• Stop Dayquil.
• Take azithromycin 500 mg daily per oral for 5 days.
• Take paracetamol 500 mg per oral, if fever occurs.
• Cold water sponging if fever is more than 100°F (37.7 °C).

Investigations:
• Complete blood count
• Widal test
• Blood smear for malarial parasite
• Dengue NS1 antigen

Consult a doctor with reports if fever is not relieved by above measures. Your doctor will examine you and might order further test for exact cause of the fever.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nishikant Verma
