Is Cramping A Side Effect Of Taking Diuretics Triamterene And Spironolactone?

I have been taking Triamterene for water retention. A few days ago my Dr added Spironolacone and advised to take them both. Last night I was awaken with sever cramping in feet, legs and tonight my hands and fingers have been cramping also. Question if this has to do with the combo diuretics?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Diuretics often cause a loss of potassium, calcium, and magnesium, which can cause cramps.

Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill) that prevents your body from absorbing too much salt and keeps your potassium levels from getting too low.

I suggest making a test to measure the level of electrolytes in your blood.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
