Is Chronic Ear Pain Related To Chiari Malformation?
Hello, I am trying to figure out if chronic ear infections and ear pain can be related to Chiari Malformation Type 1. He has had decompression surgery about 4 years ago and is now 6 years old. He is autistic and non verbal so I am not able to ask direct questions about his pain.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Chaira malformation is related to the brain stem and it affects the CSF pathway and CSF pressure. Chiari malformation is unlikely to cause ear infection and ear ache. You need to consult an ENT specialist for the ear ache. Examination of the ear needs to be done to look for evidence of infection. Ear wax can also be the cause of chronic ear ache. Long term accumulation of ear wax can lead to ear ache. Clinical examination of the ear will determine whether there is wax accumulation or not. If wax accumulation is detected, it is managed by cleaning of the ear with a procedure called syringing. If there is evidence of infection, it can be treated with antibiotics and pain killer for pain.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
