Is Chest Pain A Sign Of Pericarditis?

A year ago I was hospitalized for pericarditis and myocarditis. The pericarditis has come back twice since for unexplained reasons. Last night I got very little sleep and over the day have had worsening pains in my chest. Is it possible this is a temporary issue just caused by exhaustion or is it likely the pericarditis has returned again? I am an otherwise healthy and fit 20 year old female

Hello & Welcome to HCM,

I had gone through the case and yes pericarditis can reoccur some time. There are some following associated symptoms of pericarditis-

- Sharp and stabbing pain (caused by the heart rubbing against the pericardium).

-It may increase with coughing, swallowing, deep breathing or lying flat.

-It can be relieved by sitting up and leaning forward.

- You also may feel the need to bend over or hold your chest to breathe more comfortably.

- Pain in the back, neck or left shoulder.

- A dry cough.

- Anxiety or fatigue.

So if you have any of the above symptoms then immediate consult to cardiologist and find out the exact cause of pain. Because some time it creat the complication as Constrictive pericarditis.

Investigation required-

Chest X-ray to find the heart enlargement and lung congestion.

EKG for heart rhythm.

Echo cardiogram to rule out the pericardial effusion also .

Laboratory test- E S R and C-reactive protein for inflammation marker and hemogram for infection and tiredness.

By these tests you can get the exact cause of chest pain. So do not ignore go for investigation and proper treatment.

Hope my answer will be effective for you.

Thanks,

Dr.Soni Verma
