Is Blood In Urine A Side Effect Of Chemotherapy?

I am currently being treated for base of tongue cancer. I am undergoing chemo therapy. I am also taking pain medication. I am now experiencing bleeding when I urinate. I know I will need to see my doctor, but am concerned if the treatment may be causing this. It came on today and tonight. Please advise.

Hello,

Chemotherapy may cause sloughing of cells from the urinary bladder and which might get manifest as blood in the urine.

As of now drink plenty of water and in most cases, it will settle by itself. If symptoms persist you can consult a urologist and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
