Is Aggressive Stubborn Behavior In An 89-yr-old Lady With Brain Damage, Normal?

My mother had a fall that filled her lower left side of the brain 3 months ago. She is in medical rehab hospital. A couple days ago she had an MRI and it shows that the brain is healing nicely. However, there is brain damage. She is 89 years old. Doctors are saying that most times old people donʻt survive this. She feels abandoned by her children and alone and thinks know one cares. Though her three children are there visiting her almost every day. She is confused and has short term memory. The hard part for us is that she attacks us, is mean, yells at us and tells us how we think she is crazy and we are not helping her. She wants to go home. She sometimes refuses to take her medication. My question is - is this a part of her personality that is rooted in her foundational makeup. email address is

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The aggressive and delusional behavior she is exhibiting is due to the brain injury incurred. It is not likely a personality issue. Trauma can have long term deleterious consequences in brain in, especially in the elderly. She can be given anti psychotic medication like Risperidone to control these symptoms. Please be advised to discuss the symptoms and need for anti psychotic with her treating physician.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
