Is Abscess Behind The Earlobe In The Area Of Ear Piercing A Cause For Concern?

My daughter has had her ears pierced for several months now but she may have injured one of the piercings and now she has what I think is an abscess behind her earlobe. I took her earrings out and I have been treating with alcohol and some antibiotic cream. Should I put her earrings back in to help it drain and should I take her to see her dr?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Please donot put back the earring for a week. Let the abcess heal.
It would be better to consult a physician for oral antibiotics like azithromycin 250mg once a day for three days.
If required then the doctor may want to drain the abcess.
Also you need to wipe and clean the abcess daily with povidone iodine solution and apply an antibiotic cream.
Use a neem leaf stick after the abcess dies instead of the earring for a week.

Hope this answered your query.
Regards,
Dr.Riyanka , MBBS, MD
