Is A Surgery Necessary For Treatment Of Goiter?

I have this goiter with me for more than 40 years now. Its growth is gradual but it has become big and it is very noticeable now. Three months ago my doctor advised me to undergo surgery but I hesitated. My ultrasound showed it's not malignant but he told me there may be cancer cells hiding somewhere. It does not affect my breathing and swallowing but I can feel the compression on my left neck. I am 71 years old now. Do I really have to submit to surgery?

Hi,
Welcome to HCM!

Well, if you need surgery or not depends on many factors such as whether it is hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, the size of the goiter, which symptoms it is causing etc.

Hyperthyroidism goiters may be tried with RadioIodine drugs.

However, if your doctor has suggested you to go for surgery, I am sure he did that after assessing your symptoms and probable outcome. It will also be cosmetically better for you.

Hope this information helps.
Feel free to ask id you have any doubt.
With regards,
Dr. Sridhar
