Is A Nerve Sheath Tumor In The Ear A Concern?

Hi. I have 2nd type 1 and recently went to the er due to passing out. They found a nerve sheath tumor when They did a ct scan. They said that had nothing to do with me passing out. They said I need to get a follow up MRI. What s the likely hood that this could be malignant?

Hello,

In order to answer your question, would like to know more details, first your age, this passing out episode (has it happened before/ was it associated with nausea/ vision changes/ giddiness/ dizziness), history of high blood pressure, head injury, family history.

Yes, MRI is the ideal choice in order to evaluate that nerve sheath tumor, secondly, whether it is malignant or not, depends upon various factors -

such as whether this tumor is growing or not, can be inferred from repeat MRI done over a gap of 6 months, any features in the MRI that point towards obvious aggressive nature.

Lastly if feasible to get a biopsy ie removing a sample from that tumor and looking under a microscope.

Based upon findings from above the further course of action can be discussed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Jatin Bhatia, Radiation Oncologist
