Is A Count Of 10 Metamyelocytes In The Bone Marrow Biopsy A Concern?

My husband has been diagnosed with low risk myelodysplasia. He recently had a bone marrow biopsy. One of the numbers that came back was a count of 10 metamyelocytes. In our consultation today, the oncologist did not mention this, and we were unaware of this until we saw the hard copy of the biopsy report. Can you tell me anything about what this might mean?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

A metamyelocyte is a cell undergoing granulopoiesis. It is derived from a myelocyte, and leading to a band cell.

It is characterized by the appearance of a bent nucleus, cytoplasmic granules, and the absence of visible nucleoli.

Metamyelocytes are about the same size to slightly larger than mature and band neutrophils.

They are rarely seen in the peripheral blood. They appear sometimes in peripheral blood during severe inflammation.

Kindly take the treatment what has been prescribed by your doctor and do the necessary follow-up as advised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran S,
