Is VCUG Test Required In A Child Suffering From UTI?
Hi I have a 4 month old baby boy . few days back he had a urine infection.although e coli count was very little only 8000 he had taken a 10 day course of antibiotic .after that my pediatrician asked us to do his ultra sound and VCUG test.We did his ultra sound and it came back normal but we are little undecisive about VCUG test.So kindly tell us is it really required to do this test only after just a minor UTI or we sld wait for some time

When children under 5 years gets a urine infection, it’s a common practice to do imaging of urinary tract to look for any anomalies. The extent of investigations varies among doctors. Many doctors prefer to do both USG and VCUG in children below 1 year. I usually go for USG initially and VCUG later if USG is abnormal or a second episode of infection sets in.
Here, I think there is nothing wrong in withholding VCUG now, as USG is normal and colony count is only minimal (count above 1 lakh is taken as significant). You discuss this option with your doctor.
