Hi,

1 or 2 episodes of UTI is common in childhood, and not at all dangerous if treated properly. It is totally curable if we complete the antibiotic course (5-7 days). If his symptoms are not coming down by 3rd day, please get back to your doctor as we will need to change the antibiotic.

Please note, girls are at higher risk after 1year of age- before that, both are at equal risk, and UTI can happen in both sexes at all ages. For my patients, when they get UTI before 5 years of age, I used to get an ultrasound abdomen to see for any anomalies of urinary tract, which is very rare but better to do as per the standard protocol- you can discuss this with your doctor.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK, Pediatrician
