Hi, My brother was diagnized for TB in backbone and he was prescribed for pyzina 1000mg. He is taking it continuously from last 16 months. Now my question is, is it OK to go for such a long duration of treatment? Will it have some other side effects? Kindly engligten me on this. Though Dr. who is treating my brothder is MBBS, MD but I doubt to have such a long treatment and as per Dr, he may continue this for next 2-3 months. Hi & Welcome to HCM.

I appreciate your concern for your brother's illness.
Pyrazina alone can not be effective. In the treatment of TB no single drug is effective (because of the resistance developed by the bacteria) hence a combination of drugs are required. As the TB of the backbone (spine) can result in serious complications like nerve damage and paralysis hence a comprehensive & adequate early treatment with the proper & recommended medicines can prevent severe complications.

As per the World Health Organization's recommendation a combination of Rifampicin, Isoniazid, Ethambutol, and Pyrazinamide for two months followed by combination of Rifampicin and Isoniazid for a total period of 12 or 18 months is the most frequent protocol used for treatment of spinal TB.

This regimen is found to be very effective in the treatment of TB spine.

Kindly consult his treating doctor (supposed to be a qualified physician) to review the treatment or take an opinion from an orthopedic surgeon or a neurosurgeon regarding the drugs and their duration.

The problem of excess stomach gas and BP can be evaluated by his treating physician and get treated.

Hope to have answered your query.
