Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is ProAir HFA Inhaler The Right Medication To Clear Phlegm From The Throat?
My husband was given ProAir HFA inhaler because he had a lot of phlegm in his throat that he can t clear away. He coughs and it can move but he can t get rid of it (spit it out, etc.) I don t understand how this ProAir HFA inhaler is to help eliminate the phlegm. I understand it opens the airways, but the phlegm doesn t go anywhere. This is his 2nd round on this inhaler. Can you help assure me this is proper treatment?
Proair would normally be used for a problem in the lungs, such as asthma or COPD, I would not normally use it for phlegm in the throat.
For that, I would suggest using something to help thin the secretions and hopefully make it easier to clear the phlegm, such as guaifinesin (Mucinex).
However, there may be something in your husband's history that led the doctor to want to try this treatment, but if it is not working, then it may be time to try something else.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
