Is Prednisone The Same As Cortisone?

Can you tell me if prednisolone is cortisone? I had an injection in my ankle June 26 and still have a bruise and my ankle and a little way up my leg seems darker than my other foot. Also I am still limping although the drug gave me a great deal of relief. They said I have gout which I have had in the past but this all flared up after a fall. By the way, I am 86 years old with all my faculties working well

Hello. Good day. Thanks for writing to HCM. I am Dr Praveen and I will be answering your query today.
Cortisone is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland which in practice is used for a variety of conditions including the one you used it for. Prednisolone is a synthetic corticosteroid.
Its useful for inflamatory conditions like the one you had secondary to high uric acid levels. It would be good to reassess you since the problem occured secondary to a fall. An imaging of the area with a CT/MRI will be good as fracture (including microfractures not seen on xray) can be present (which is higher at your age). A physical examination is very useful as well.
Wishing you good health.
Warm regards.
