Is OraQuick HIV Test Done 6 Weeks Post Exposure Conclusive?

About 6 weeks ago I had sexual encounter with both insertive and receptive both protected of unknown status. After week 1 I started with cheek pain and some diarrhea but subsided atfter 3 days. At 4 weeks I started with some fatigue, and some unwellness and finally got a small sore throat and general muscle aches for about a 4 days now. Still a little fatigued and a general body ache. I got two oral swab tests Oraquick for HIV at 5.5 weeks and 6 weeks and came out negative. Blood was withdrawn for a PCR test for HIV but results are not back yet. CMV and EBV tests are negative. No parasites or ova in stools. At week 5.5 after possible exposed WBC were high and eosinophils low. Everything was normal. Got some stress too. What possible explanation might it be?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

The Oraquick test for HIV is a test for any antibodies to HIV 1 and 2 viruses which are present in the oral fluid.

This test is designed to be done after following instructions in the booklet with the testing kit.

The test is not conclusive after 6 weeks following exposure.

This is because HIV 1 and 2 antibodies have a window period of 6 months and you should do the test after 6 months from the exposure to get a conclusive result.

To be sure about HIV infection after 6 weeks you can use the 4th generation HIV 1 and HIV 2 antibodies and p24 antigen test which is conclusive for HIV 1 infection after 30 days. Stress can cause feeling of tiredness and fatigue and that is happening with you. Please do not worry.
