Is Omnicef The Right Medication To Treat UTI?

Hello. My mother in law was seen in the ER yesterday with a UTI and bronchitis. She is 82 with COPD, dementia, atrial fib. They gave her a dose IV of Rocephin, which i think was for the UTI. She should have been admitted, but Medicare criteria was not completely met, and they sent her home only on Omnicef. My question is what is the Omnicef for - bronchitis or UTI? My husband took her so he asked no questions. I think it s for the bronchitis, but I worry that the UTI wont be cleared up with just the IV meds because she is really having alot more mental impairment (as she always does with the UTIs). She gets these about every 3 months. Please advise me.

Thanks for asking at Healthcare Magic. I read your question and I understand your concern.
Omnicef is second generation cepalsporin. It has activity against gram positive as well as gram negative bacteria. Bacteria involve in UTI are gram negative while in bronchitis are gram positive.
Hence it covers both.
I would like to advise you to continue her antibiotics, also start her on cranberry juices, vaccinate her with pnemoccal 23 and influenza vaccine. Give her water atleast 8-12 glasses per day.
Hope it helps best.
