Is Naltrexone Effective In The Treatment Of Alcoholism?

I am considering going on a drug called Naltrexone to assist me in my desire to stop drinking. I was told by my psychologist that this may be a benefit to me. I have read about it and things he told me about it were there, but he also mentioned that it would prevent me from feeling the effects of alcohol, which is fine, but is that indeed the case? Also what risks could occur if I did drink something on this medication?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes it is helpful. There is about a 25% higher rate of success with it than without it in controlled clnical trials. This is about the improvement with going to AA. The two should be used together.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
